Using the Library

Visiting for Research

We welcome visits from researchers wishing to use the collection. In this section you will find more information about arranging to visit us, as well as answers to some frequently asked questions about preparing for your visit and using our archive materials.

Arranging Your Visit

Many items from the collection are on permanent display however, if you wish to consult our libraries and stored collections, we have a dedicated research space in the Wood Library.

Our archive is open to all however, as we are limited on space, we do ask that research visits are conducted by prior arrangement so please contact us to make an appointment.

Prior to arranging your visit, you can search our collection online for suitable materials. In addition our staff have extensive knowledge of Johnson and his circle, and of the collection holdings, and are happy to discuss your research needs and provide information as required.

On the day of your visit, we ask that you bring some photographic ID with you and will ask you to complete one of our researcher registration forms, which outlines our guidance for using the collection.

Accessibility

The Wood Library is situated on the second floor of the Museum and is accessible only by stairs.

Off-site research facilities with level access can be booked at Lichfield Guildhall, approximately 5 minutes from the Museum, so please inform us when booking if this service will be required.

Getting Here

Both the Museum and the Guildhall are located in Lichfield city centre.

Information on train, bus, and road links into Lichfield can be found on our How to Find Us page, which also includes a link to Visit Lichfield for information on local accommodation.

We do not have dedicated car parking on site however there are long-stay car parks on nearby Lombard Street and at the multi-storey car park at The Friary, both of which are within 5 minutes walking distance of the Museum.

Facilities

The Wood Library has a desktop computer with internet access and word processing software. You are welcome to bring your own laptop, as the Library also has Wifi.

A4 printing and copying facilities are available by request and at additional cost. We currently charge 30p (inclusive VAT) per side of A4 for colour copies/prints and 20p (inclusive VAT) per side of A4 for monochrome copies/prints. Some objects may not be available for copying due to their condition. Museum staff can advise on this and, for most of our manuscripts, scans are available and can be printed for you if required.

Toilet facilities for researchers are available on site. Access to these is via stairs at the main Museum site however accessible toilets are available at our off-site facility.

We do not have a break room on site and, in order to prevent damage to the collection, food and drink is not permitted in the Wood Library, research rooms or Guildhall study space. As we are situated in the centre of Lichfield, there are a range of cafes, restaurants and shops within a few minutes’ walk of the Museum where you can purchase lunch, drinks and snacks - our staff are happy to make recommendations to our favourites!
