Welcome to the
Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum
Visit the family home of writer Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) here in the historic city of Lichfield.
Best known as the author of A Dictionary of the English Language (1755), Dr Samuel Johnson was also a playwright, poet, journalist, editor, critic, and biographer.
He is one of the most quoted people in the history of the English language and remains one of the greatest literary figures of all time.
Johnson spent the first 27 years of his life in this atmospheric trader’s townhouse, now a museum with a stunning collection of Johnson treasures.
Visitors can explore five floors which tell the story of Johnson’s life from childhood to national celebrity. See Johnson’s famous English dictionary, try hands-on activities, play historical dress up, and have a go at our family trails.
‘Curiosity is, in great and generous minds,
the first passion and the last.’
